November 13, BYHP’s Career Development Committee hosted a panel of industry leaders with the focus on Navigating a Healthcare Career Transition. The panel was moderated by Lisa Metropolis-Toby, Assistant Dean of Career Engagement at Boston University’s School of Public Health and she was joined by panelists including Susan Buckey, Director of Training, Quality & Healthcare Industry Initiatives at JVS CareerSolution, Ahmed Albaiti, CEO at Medullan, Catherine West, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Innovative Programs at Steward Healthcare, and Timothy Miley, Associate Director of Government Affairs for Gilead Sciences.
The panel offered dynamic and insightful dialogue around their experiences with and strategies for career transitions. They stressed constant adaptation and flexibility as a mainstay of a successful career and transition, with Susan Buckey emphasizing the importance of remaining a ‘student’ or learning-oriented in one’s career.
Catherine West noted the impact mentors have had on her career trajectory; giving practical advice for approaching both informational interviewing and expanding a network. She explained that building a mentoring team who can offer direct feedback, varied points of view, and ideas for growing in a role is invaluable.
Demonstrating the importance of networking in a career change, Lisa Metropolis-Toby asked for a show of hands of how many panelists had gotten jobs exclusively through networking and all confirmed that networking had played a critical part in their receipt of offers.
